Judges' notes

Scotland's national book town is Wigtown in Galloway. This wonderful, scenic, atmospheric area is full of attractions and ought to be more popular - but folks just bash on up to the better-known Highlands. Their loss. Hillcrest is an engaging,  warm old stone house here; it won the Good for the Soul award 2010.  With a dash of the Bohemian and constant upgrading it's a charming, laid-back choice.

Bedrooms range in size and comfort level. All have good hospitality trays, organic toiletries. There's an attractive family room, Beauly; an airy ground-floor twin, Lorne; a lovely, newly decorated twin or superking called Solway with excellent bathroom; Cromarty has a sleigh bed and double-size shower. Top room is Moray with its big bay window and contemporary kingsize four poster. You may have spotted the naming theme: all are firths, as are the owners Deborah & Andrew.... Firth. Sweet!

The big red-toned lounge has a smashing log stove, free wi-fi, games and books. And food? The dining room has wooden floors and an informal atmosphere. Deborah won the Real & Local Food Cook Commendation 2011 and all food is freshly sourced and cooked daily. Dinner from a daily-changing set menu is £18: recommended! Such things as very local beef and salmon, salt marsh lamb and organic pork or lamb. Breakfast is first-class and has choice and quality. Members of Savour the Flavours.

When here do make sure to visit the Bladnoch distillery. Our tips include the otherworldly Cairn Holy I and II; the Isle of Whithorn is scenic and Whithorn is full of history and resonance. The booktown has been a real hit; there are book festivals. There's the Dark Skies Park. In town we also love ReadingLasses for books, baking and bonhomie. Oh, and Hillcrest and The Machars make a fine pairing for an intimate wedding.
