Judges' notes

A few miles north of Fort William, at the foot of Scotland's highest mountain, 4,409' Ben Nevis, a castle was built for a Highland aristocrat who would later host not only Queen Victoria ("I never saw a lovelier place") but also Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States. Today this 5-star Relais & Ch
âteaux-member hotel, open all year, is currently Scottish Luxury Hotel of the Year - a title it holds on to with a velvet grasp, it seems. The fact is, it's the real McCoy; a real castle, and really luxurious.

The great hall has a frescoed ceiling where cherubim swirl above a magnificent chandelier, splendid open fireplace and grand piano played for dinner at weekends. Despite the grandeur of it all, and the utterly beautiful public rooms, the castle has a genuinely friendly atmosphere, led by manager Jane Watson - a local lady made a Dame of Hospitality in 2011. The hotel transport may well be a Rolls-Royce Phantom but no pomposity gets in the way of smiles and kind service. Indeed, everything just purrs along.

Bedrooms [gallery] range from modestly-proportioned yet classy to three huge royal suites - King's, Queen's and Prince's. In all rooms, discerning details delight and surprise. Room service is outstanding - and that includes superb breakfasts. Food is, of course, taken very seriously. The castle holds a Michelin star and the elegant dining room with its valuable, gleaming furnishings gifted by a King of Norway is Scotland's most graceful and refined. Cuisine, service, wine and atmosphere are perfectly-cut facets.

Inverlochy Castle is owned by ICMI who run a collection of top-notch hotels including Greywalls, Rocpool Reserve and Inver Lodge. Scottish Hotel of the Year-winner in 2008, the castle rests not on its many laurels and year-on-year we see enhancements to this unforgettable and so-special place.
