Personally-run country house near Pitlochry a hit with guests
The Pass of Killiecrankie is itself now by-passed by the arterial A9 so enjoy peace, beautiful scenery and yet be handily based. Killiecrankie House is personally-run with dedication and wit by Henrietta Fergusson – formerly in charge at the famous Carnegie Club at Skibo Castle (think Madonna’s wedding, etc.). This is her new charge; guests are loving it: in 2009 the Consumers’ Award (most positive feedback over a year) was won. Henrietta has gently placed her stamp of class, taste and charm on this less-formal small country house hotel set in pretty gardens. The hall, bar and conservatory areas to the front have been restyled in light, contemporary colours. Local paintings abound. Bedrooms are fresh, immaculately-maintained. Kind staff wear unusually dashing tartan outfits. Food has honesty, quality and flavour – fine dining or informal. Recently we'd an exceptionally good dinner: mouthwatering pan-fried supreme of guinea fowl; loved the inclusion of a cheeseboard (£38 for 3c and cheese). Outdoors see rich birdlife, red squirrels, deer; in Pitlochry see a play?

> Ring to discuss the accommodation options before booking as each room is very different
> Of the superior rooms we perhaps like room 9 best; shades of blue, garden view, bath and shower
> On the ground floor room 11 is a delightful small suite (twin or double) with bright bathroom
> Room 7 is a rather sweet standard double with views over the front and has a large bathroom
> Popular head chef Mark Easton is a dedicated rural chef, retaining 2 AA rosettes for some years
> The candlelit dining room serves a daily-changing menu offering around 4 options per course
> In the bar conservatory there’s a surprisingly extensive, interesting menu of classics and modern dishes
> The wine list – which has won awards – is excellent, intriguing and a model of clarity
> Wi-fi is free though slightly hit-and-miss reception-wise, fine in public rooms, some bedrooms
> Open all year except January and February but is open for Christmas and Hogmanay

On the A9 between Perth and Inverness – travelling north look for the signs for Killiecrankie and Kinloch Rannoch a few miles past Pitlochry, on the left. The hotel is a mile or so further on, past the Battle of Killiecrankie visitor centre.

Henrietta runs the hotel very personally so the best way to plan a stay, really, is to ring up and have a chat with her. Rooms are all very individual so she’ll do her best, we know, to match you to the best one for you. Offers are available in quieter months. Theatre breaks a great idea. Dogs welcome; Henrietta has one.
