One of the most appreciated Scots country house hotels, home of celebrated chef Lady Claire Macdonald and clan chief Lord Macdonald, Kinloch is now managed by the next generation, namely Isabella and Tom, and head chef Marcello Tully. A mile off a main road, round a quiet inlet on south Skye, stands original North House and, steps away, matching South House. Décor is impeccable, log fires scent the air and an atmosphere of warm, classy yet almost laid-back country life pervades. Drawing rooms are superb; family oils, memorabilia abound; there’s even a Claire Macdonald Shop tucked away. Supremely comfy dining room is heritage exemplified; kind service enhances the Michelin star experience. It's all in good taste (including the cuisine, of course) and friendly, embracing, romantic.

Need to know

> Accommodation in both houses is of similar quality; South Lodge is just as good as older part
> Room 8 is a good choice: views two sides, walk-in robes, big bathroom, sofa and armoire
> If you fancy a ground floor room then 1 has real style and elegance plus a lovely bathroom
> In South Lodge go for upper level rooms as they have brilliant views out over Loch na Dal
> A small drawing room with log fire and new bar mixes tradition with a more up to date feature
> Main drawing room is gloriously comfy; squishy sofas, plaid, padded window seats, crackling fire
> Tom won the Wine & Spirits Gold Medal for his stunning wine list, plethora of drinks innovations
> Dining brings reliably superb cuisine, beautiful, vibrant, founded on local food - and top skills
> Marcello won our Rising Star Chef of the Year 2009 and later that year a Michelin star
> Sleat (pron. slay-at) peninsula is scenic; see Armadale; also several galleries and attractions

We love…

…Starting the day here with an amazingly good breakfast served in the inviting dining room
…Those plush drawing rooms, not least South House’s with roaring fire and honesty bar
…Browsing Lady Claire’s shop (online, too) for her range of foods, hampers, cookery books, super gifts
…Wine flights with dinner – 3 x small glasses selected for you; and try the frozen whisky – wow!
…A feeling that one could not possibly, under any circumstances, be anywhere but… Scotland
