Judges' notes

Prestonfield is a one-off, arguably Scotland's most remarkable hotel. The 1687 mansion sits in grounds next to Holyrood Park; Highland cattle and peacocks look on. The renowned have enjoyed its temptations, from the Enlightenment to the stars of our times. Celebrated Edinburgh restaurateur James Thomson, Fellow of The Scottish Hotel Awards, took it over a few years ago and today it's opulent, romantic and memorable. Jaded was consigned to history.

Handsomely black-kilted concierges welcome you. Candles, flowers scent the air; rich colours and textures, bold furnishings grab the attention. Visit for a famed afternoon tea by a log fire or dine finely in the atmospheric restaurant, Rhubarb, where award-winning chef John McMahon leads. See the Tapestry Room with its huge fireplace and stunning plasterwork ceiling.

Bedrooms and suites are highly individual, differing considerably in size and drama; bathrooms vary, some are more modern.
Accommodation is decadent in style: all rooms are luxurious in one way or another while the best are magnificently sensual. Aircon and other mods cons like wi-fi are discreetly provided. The Owner's Suite, an amazing place on the top floor, is a time-capsule: one half expects Adam Smith round for a chat.

The Stables, a round, tented arena adjacent is famous for weddings and glittering events; has twice held our hotel 'Oscars'.

There are quirks - but what would you expect? None? Quite.
