Lady Claire Macdonald presenting the Most Exciting New Restaurant 2009 trophy

Most Exciting New Restaurant 2009 at The Scottish Hotel Awards

“The Rutland is an institution in Edinburgh but was in desperate need of a makeover. We have taken the time to bring it back to its former glory - and made it one of the most talked about new venues and hotels in the city. The rooms are both stylish and comfortable and ultimately somewhere we would want to stay ourselves. The food is delicious, using local seasonal Scottish ingredients and the desserts are exceptionally moreish. The hidden gem, we believe is our late lounge - there really is nothing quite like it. We hope to see you soon at The Rutland.” - Claire Yetton, Management

Friendly, cool and exciting new Edinburgh boutique hotel

European cities love their boutique hotels and Edinburgh is no exception. As one of the EU’s most popular city destinations the Scottish capital has many chic options. The Rutland Hotel is newest in town, opening July ’08. It's bang in the centre, at the west end of Princes Street, with castle views. A very large sum was spent on redeveloping the whole rounded corner block; the result is an exceptionally cool, well-thought-through and individual choice. Not only are impressively-soundproofed bedrooms sexy and bold, with nice touches like a fresh-baked muffin on arrival, they're practical and popular even with business guests with a sense of élan. Most Exciting New Restaurant 2009 award was won by Restaurant at The Rutland – a striking, comfortable place with friendly, skilled service and fine food by David Haetzman. Very strong on wines, tho list hard to read, tiny print. The street-level lounge bar has comfy seating, quality informal dining, cocktails. The One Below is a truly NYC-style affair with an i-bar and arched, private booths for intimate or group nights out. Brochure PDF.

> The 12 individually-designed and shaped bedrooms all offer elegant glamour
> Each has wi-fi, fully stocked mini-bar, safe, big flatscreen TV, iPod dock, muffins, newspapers
> Most rooms have a striking tall white padded headboard surrounded by subtle lighting
There are 2 modern-baroque castle view rooms, one mainly black, the other white and gold
Service is notably friendly, in all departments, and we commend the hotel management for this
> Restaurant is linked to the bar below by an oval cut-out in the floor so the atmos carries thru
> Lunch and dinner in the restaurant offer exciting, interesting, well-prepared modern cuisine
> The bar offers a wide range of drinks, cocktails; offers big round booths and plenty comfort
> The One Below nightclub is a safe, sassy and intriguing place to enjoy a city evening
> Breakfast is served contemporary-style in the comfy bar and offers trad or modern options

If you know Edinburgh, then the Rutland Hotel is adjacent to the famous Caledonian Hotel at the west end of Princes Street. It’s a 5-minute taxi ride from Waverley train station. There is disruption in the area until 2011 due to the new Edinburgh trams works.

A family-owned and directed business, the Rutland Hotel has benefitted hugely from their somewhat unique world experience and financial clout. And yet, genuine friendliness and sustained standards shine through. Upper level rooms are perhaps best. As mentioned, soundproofing is great. Do dine in – you’ll enjoy it. Here, there’s substance to the style. Join as a Rutland VIP. Rutland Hotel on Facebook.
