Loch Awe is long, often gathering wreaths of mist about its islands and shores; it’s been called a place of myth and Celtic legend. Along a winding road into wildness is this rambling, absolutely romantic 1834 baronial house. We’ve loved it for years and Conde Nast readers voted it their 3rd-favourite UK leisure hotel in 2010, no less. It is quirky; it’s not perfect; it’s charming, full of antiques (pristine and a bit bashed) and objets d’art, open fires, witty paintings, dramatic colours… all set in beautiful woodlands at the loch’s edge... just 2 hours’ drive from Glasgow. Chef of 12 years here Gary Goldie (Médaille d’Or 2010) is gifted; a lovely dining room overlooks lawn and loch. It’s truly a unique escape and has all the ingredients. Uprated to 3 rosettes / 3 red stars for 2011. And about time too, Mr AA.

Need to know

> Accommodation is very well shown on hotel’s exemplary, practical yet glossy website
> As rooms are each so very different we recommend a chat with reception or manager Peter
> The Boat Shed is contemporary, down by the small jetty: sexy; or check out Rose Cottage
> The drawing room is gilt and beige; grand piano, sculpture, big sofas, rugs and plenty peace
> There’s a bar lounge with a crackling fire and elegant feel; nice choice of Scotch malts
> Dining: dinner is a set menu; course options are happily available if you discuss this in advance
> The dining room is plush, matt jade with red roses (usually) on the tables, fine napery, views
> Fresh flowers, books, glossy magazines, local information, woodland walks, picnics… all on the go
> For a small wedding explore the Intimate Wedding Hotel of the Year 2010 through this great Video
> In the local area do remember to visit the remarkable St Conon’s Kirk across the loch

We love…

…Gifted head chef Gary Goldie’s beautiful, sophisticated yet natural, first-class cuisine
…The wide range of bedroom choice – from subtle to bold, in a palette of striking colours
…Ardanaiseig’s environs are wild and have been enhanced by the present eco-aware owners
…The remote and hidden-away feel of the place, and yet Oban is only an hour away
…An all-season house like this: cosy fires in winter, the great outdoors in good weather
