Judges' notes

Hugely popular, this resort sits in a wooded glen on the edge of Brodick on alluring Arran, the isle known as 'Scotland in miniature'. It's reachable from downtown Glasgow in 2 hours - including the 55-minute CalMac sailing. Auchrannie has distinct aspects: a country house hotel with 20m pool; quite separate, newer family-oriented spa resort building; and cottage-type lodges including superb new Design Gold Medal-winning luxury ones. [Accommodation gallery.] Just opened (2011) and brilliant for kids is the Playbarn

Owned / developed by an island family - Linda Johnston was made a Dame of Hospitality 2011 - the atmosphere can range from tranquil to romantic to holiday fun: you choose.
We like that the discrete aspects of the place are physically separate. Year-on-year we see enhancements. Most rooms in the original country house now have sleek, sassy new bathrooms and showers, for example. Accommodation in resort building is ideal for mum, dad and kids - all the support facilities are there. Free wi-fi, too.

Activities facilities are tops; many open to non-residents. A team led by Manager Gold Medal-winner Richard Small and Iain Hamilton, Operations Director have a commitment to which we bear witness. Marketing campaigns - successfully bold and original - have brought much vital business to the whole island. The resort puts real effort into its dining options; restaurants include fine-dining Eighteen69 and seafood grill Brambles in the old house, plus the 'quality casual' Cruize bar and grill in the spa resort.

Unique amongst Scots island hotels - and we have over 700 isles! - Auchrannie powers on with good folk and an outstanding level of consumer choice we admire and praise. Small wonder so many are Buddies.
