Rooms 8

Along a wooded lane 20 minutes’ drive from Oban this charming 300 year-old mansion opened as a hotel in May '09. A grand first impression is followed by warm hospitality, period décor, contemporary freshness. A handsome hall; an original big drawing room with sofas, beautiful plasterwork, a grand piano; the Laird’s Room has a whisky bar, open fire, plush red armchairs… all the real McCoy. Ambitious food: the owners (notably well-travelled) have set standards, prices to match the best in Argyll. Dining room is spacious, gold-hued; tables with linen, fresh flowers, candles. Afterwards your bedroom will be a true country house affair. A marvellous billiards room is very popular. Families genuinely welcomed. It's not formal, but a laid-back, stress-eliminating weave of comforts.

Need to know

> Of 8 bedrooms, 3 are superior grade; one is a family room / suite (4 self-catering cottages, too)
> Moray is a pretty, superior king, big bathroom; Finlarig has twin carved beds, is very quiet
> Edinample has a loch view, pretty feel; but airy, bay-windowed king Glenure we might like best
> Taymouth is biggest: half-tester bed, bay window, huge bathroom - a real suite with dressing area
> All rooms have flat TVs, DVDs, free internet, luxury tea / coffee cabinet; locally-made toiletries
> Some rooms have quirks; we didn’t like the tiny kettles; shortbread / fresh milk have to be requested
> There’s a notably flexible approach throughout; we like this 'yes we can' style we experienced
> Dining: go à la carte from the daily-changing menu, or less formally, ie. a steak is catered for happily
> House is in great walking country, plenty of information is on hand; grounds are mature woodlands
Ideal for smaller (up to 40) weddings and partnerships (licensed) and just perfect for exclusive use

We love…

…The beautiful, spacious and original public rooms with their interesting details
…Flexibility: choose to stay in the hotel or in one of the 4 very pretty cottages
…Owner Heather’s determination to make this country house a family-friendly one
…The use of local ingredients: our waitress was from the family who fish the langoustines
…Open fires and the scent of woodsmoke: a real country house needs that

Note: there has been a change of chef this season and we will update the food aspects of the review shortly for 2011. New chef is Oskar Kalanins. Thank you.
