A friendly, interesting option in south-west Scotland. We like the well-stocked, log fire-cheered bar; the simple conservatory with sofas, library lounge with free wi-fi, the welcoming, farmhouse-feel breakfast room. The river Nith flows past the very garden. There’s a genuine, country restfulness to it all. But there's more.
Former Michelin star-holder chef Ian McAndrew and hospitality-trained wife Jane moved to Scotland in 2007 and have been restoring (public rooms first) this historic ex-manse and latterly faded hotel. Happily, today Blackaddie is on-the-up and unless you demand (and are ready to pay for) the pricey designer bedrooms usually associated with such acclaimed good food... you might just find the deal here rather tasty.
Dine casually from a 'real food' bar menu – or go for the high-calibre fine cuisine served in the elegant, classic dining room. Then stay over relatively inexpensively. The hotel's special offers are excellent if you’re a bit of a foodie. Breakfast is delicious, a cut above; much local produce, nice china, country atmosphere.
Bedrooms: some plain, some better. Enjoy river views from comfy double 'Glengoyne', the best room; also from 'Glenlivet', a pleasant single, and double/twin 'Glenfarclas'. 'Macallan' is an airy double with garden view and bigger, curved shower. Three roomy lodges are adjacent to hotel; good for kids, grannies and pets. In time all rooms will be updated but for now they’re good value.
Dumfries & Galloway has so much: wild nature, activities, largest forest park in UK, the new Dark Skies Park… and superb meat, fish and game. Base camp Blackaddie for beautiful food? Give it a bash.
