Judges' notes

The
YouTube video above is neither by us nor the hotel but captures the sense of fun and delight we know many have experienced at this surprising new city centre Glasgow hotel. With a sister or two in Amsterdam (one of which as won TripAdvisor's 'most trendy hotel' award 2010 and 2011) and siblings about to spring up in the States and London, citizenM Glasgow gets a great big thumbs up from our team. Kudos!

It's a valuable rethink of what a city hotel should be: from drawing board up. It was constructed modularly and the smart,
Lego-esque edifice sort-of just slotted together. It's highly energy efficient. From the online-only booking system and fair premium budget room rates, the amazingly well-designed living spaces to the adorably funky, small but super-efficient, colour-changing bedrooms... it's a winner. It's not for everyone. It is, however, just the very thing for many "citizens of the world", as their leitmotif goes.

At the 2011 Scottish Hotel Awards the hotel won several top prizes including the prestigious Scottish Hotel Design Award and a Gold Laurel trophy for outstanding achievement. It also won New Hotel of the Year 2011. So many facets contributed: so very few issues disappointed (a few technical gremlins when newly opened). We love the open-all-hours 'canteen' / bar set-up with its wide choice of fashionable and healthy foods. Who'd have expected cocktails? Free wifi, perhaps, and there is; but playful sex toys? Well, why not? They join witty gifts and an array of essentials on sale. The new SocietyM business floor is brilliant.

When all is said and done, many of us just want a very clean room, great shower, comfortable bed - and a bit of luxury if it's on the go. You'll get all that here. And very much more. If it were a gadget it might just, arguably, be an
iPad. If in town, you might want to try it as your pad.
