Judges' notes

Crianlarich seems signposted from almost everywhere in Scotland, such is the geographic importance of this junction; routes to Perthshire, Loch Lomond, Glen Coe, Oban and Fort William cross or pass here. Even the train (most usefully) stops here. Thus the big white hotel is a familiar sight to travellers, and has been since Victorian times. But although much the same externally as it always has been, inside it's all positive change. Awards in 2010 and 2011 for real food and value recognise this.

Happily, the experienced owners did not create a pretentious place. What they did was make the hotel a bit more contemporary, stylish and comfortable and used tough materials like stone, slate, wood and leather so that walkers, skiers, passing business people or couples exploring the Highlands might all feel equally relaxed. We much like the mix that has been created. You can even get married here.

There are log stoves and half-a-dozen separate places you might sit and unwind. Good food and drink: real ale (including from Colonsay, from where the owner hails) at the bar; delicious home baking in the panelled Highland lounge where hearty, tasty cooking on the go most of the day. AA rosette is held. [Menu.]

Bedrooms come in four grades, premier are best; pay a bit more for extra space, guaranteed good view and a few extras. Family rooms available. New-look rooms coming soon. You might choose to stay here for the convenience or for the many scenic local attractions and activities. The hotel works closely with Glencoe Mountain Ski Centre. We know demands here at peak ski times can be formidable and staff, led by ebullient manager Andrea Paton, work hard to provide real hospitality in a prominent location. Yes, change is good.

Recommended by us as a Country Hotel.
