Skye’s largest hotel has benefited from investment in thoughtful design. Impressive results have led already to awards. The setting, on a hill on the edge of Portree Bay, gives the extended former hunting lodge magnificent views. The sleek Cuillin Brasserie offers informal dining and a ‘big hotel feel'; part of the stylish open plan area is the Malt Embassy. The View restaurant is light and contemporary, winning a Design Gold Medal 2010 for its makeover: ‘seafood and see art’ the witty motto. Reception is notably welcoming with award-winning receptionist Donella at the helm. The drawing room is spacious, glam, yet with homely comfort. Bedrooms offer wide choice. Get hotel's E-brochure.

Need to know

> Accommodation is in the main original house and a newer building at the side
> You have a wide range of bedroom class and price: Classic, Premier, Turret and Cuillin
> Best bedrooms are at the front and include all Cuillin Range and Premier Portfolio rooms
> Turret Suites are romantic and spacious although they don’t have the same bay views
> The View restaurant has taken the quality of the whole dining experience up several notches
> The Cuillin Brasserie serves all-day informal dining; watch out for events such as jazz
> An exceptionally well-selected range of Scotch malts is offered in the unstuffy Malt Embassy
> In summer do plan ahead as Skye gets very busy and your room choice may be limited
> Grounds and gardens surround the hotel and in good weather drink or dine al fresco
> Hotel is a wee bit tricky to find so do check out the map before you go or ask reception

Love it...

… Care in food, drink and service in uplifting The View restaurant; wines and whisky lists well selected
… The natural setting is enviable anyway but the investment of recent times enhances the whole experience
… Options: wide choice of room type and tariff; choice in dining style and cost; choice of themed packages
… Newer design details with greater sense of place make hotel original, a retort to copycat hotel styles
