Judges' notes

History and heritage are at the heart here in one of Scotland's most interesting, graceful hotels. Parts date back to the 16th century and the main house, over two centuries old, has forever a place in Scottish lore as the requisitioned HQ of Bonnie Prince Charlie's fateful campaign; Culloden battlefield is not far away. But in the more peaceful times since the house has stood fast and today is a unique Highland hotel. [Gallery.]

There are other grand mansion hotels, of course, but Culloden is an unusual weave of architectural grandeur, wonderfully warm service and cheerful informality. It's an unabashed celebration of things Scottish. Overseas guests adore the sense of place and lack of stuffiness; there's no weighty sense of enforced luxury. This inviting house, as an American might say, is what it is: the real thing. Long-serving Kyle Neville won a Hospitality Gold Medal 2011 and says with typical kindness to guests: "welcome home".

Dining: head chef Michael Simpson received the Senior Chef Fellowship 2011 and his immaculately disciplined kitchen produces high-class classic cuisine. [Dinner menu.] Breakfasts are a particular delight. Enjoy in the elegance the Adam-style dining room or morning room; relax before in the Library bar with connoisseur's collection of Scotch and brandies - and after dinner (or anytime) in the airy, high-ceilinged drawing room with its pale chintz and big fire. Ponder Hogmanay here - or a wedding, even?

Bedrooms and suites offer impressive variety and style and the hotel's online booking has helpful details. Some rooms have fires and chandeliers, separate sitting rooms or four poster beds. Guests have included royalty and presidents. Outdoors, the 4-acre walled garden is an award-winning joy. Sauna in the dungeon; treatments available; many activities arranged. Free wi-fi. And chivalry all round.
