Judges' notes

A very positive story: that's the news from Arran about the Douglas Hotel. Passion plus a remarkable investment by an island family have transformed a prominent yet worn-out Brodick building into a sleek, surprisingly urbane boutique hotel. Possibly too much money has been spent on architects and designers but who are we guests to complain? The beautiful isle now has another facet to its many appeals.

On a slope, fronted by a sweeping lawn and immaculate modern landscaping, the red sandstone hotel is now distinguished by black window frames and restrained signage. Step inside and a large watercolour behind reception shows the scale of the refurbishment: 100%. The ground floor offers an airy big lounge bar with views to bay, castle and Goat Fell; casual atmosphere yet posh teas and home baking. Games available. Adjacent is the striking Douglas bistro where contemporary food is served in a happening atmosphere; quality produce and a feel-good factor in undeniably stylish surroundings. Fish dishes and steaks cooked on their special Vapo grill have been getting excellent feedback. [Sample menu.]

Bedrooms are each individual but all show admirable taste in their restrained use of top quality fabrics and colour combinations. The two top floor suites are stunning and, a few functional quibbles aside, all rooms are deluxe and impressive. The hotel describes itself as a "luxury" experience and the rooms do indeed meet and merit such a description. It's all quite a surprise, really!

The project has been a huge challenge and the hotel is new. The signs are promising and some good people are working hard to bring more lustre to Arran's lure. It has been nominated for New Hotel of the Year 2012 and we'd say it was in the running. Do please let us know how you get on.
