Judges' notes

The sensational vista from the door - let alone many bedrooms - of this well-run hotel would be reason enough to chose the location. But a string of awards highlight the glam, boutique feel of this stylish, delightfully friendly Isle of Skye choice. It's owned by Hoteliers of the Year 2011 Captain Ken Gunn and Anne Gracie; he has St Kilda roots and his career as a mariner was perhaps never in doubt; Anne meanwhile is an island lady, a Gaelic-speaker and one with local knowledge
gu leòr to guide your stay.

The bold, handsome stone building was fully refurbished a couple of years ago. Out went florals, whorls and dust... and in came bold colours, sassy style and a bit of oomph. And yet there is still a sense of belonging: the Chart Room bar has a yachting theme and (along with neighbouring sister hotel Toravaig House) Duisdale can offer something genuinely
special - luxury yacht trips on Solus na Mara. We follow the sea adventures on their Facebook page; some of the images brought back are stunning.

Eighteen excellent bedrooms include very modern doubles including two wonderful sea-facing ones; a nice single with big bed and fine bathroom; garden suites and four-poster rooms for special occasions. Some are quirky and fun. Good food is served both in the bar and the rather fashionable conservatory-fronted restaurant; head chef is George McCallum. Getting hitched? This is the Small Wedding Hotel of the Year 2011; the management team, led by David and Anita, whom we know and trust, love such occasions.

Skye is a dramatic, iconic island. This hotel is in Sleat, 'the garden of Skye', near Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and Armadale castle and gardens. There are some smashing places in which to stay on the misty isle; Duisdale is undoubtedly one of the best and is the most 'boutique' of them all.
Tha sin glè mhath, so it is.
