Eilean Iarmain in Sleat is as quaint a huddle of interesting places on a scenic spit of land as ever one might find. At the hub, a fine inn with Gaelic in its soul – Sabhal Mòr Ostaig college was pioneered by inn owner the late Sir Iain Noble. Stay in the Stables suites, Garden House or old taigh-osda itself: from family suites to romantic doubles. You'll always know in which country you are: this is a tranquil pulse-point of Alba. There’s hunting tartan and modern island art; an exciting wine list in an elegant dining room; and venison burgers in Bar am Praban. Open fires all round. Buildings, including Floraidh boutique, have handwritten bilingual signage painted on immaculate white. It's all a true taste of Skye where special whisky, art and hospitality are in a unique plaid. News & events.

Need to know

> The inn itself has 6 bedrooms: room 2 has a charming, comfy old canopied grand bed from a castle
> Room 7 is a standard double we like: village view, light, well-spaced, bath with over-shower
> Room 8 is quirky, with a sleigh bed, a rounded ‘turret’ area with small windows, lots of panelling
> Still in the inn, room 56 is a light, lovely room with village view and bath with over-shower
> The Garden House has 6 nice rooms, the best of which are upstairs incl. superior 10 with best view
> Room 15 has great views on both sides; on the ground level we like pitch-pine lined room 9
> In the stables there are 4 two-level suites; 4 is biggest; all are flexible and family-perfect (up to 4)
> Braicaist (breakfast) in light conservatory room: nice buffet; 4 fish dishes; venison sausages; good
> Quality informal dining in the bar includes fresh local fish, curry, game, traditional items with flair
> Birlinn dining room offers a daily-changing menu with three options per course; holds 2 AA rosettes

We love…

… The upliftingly beautiful setting of pristine white buildings clustered round islets and a lighthouse
… A sense of place with few rivals in Alba; here find ye a real bit of accessible Scots-Gaelic culture
… Hospitality from Neil Macdonald, Flora and their team – the inn is, in 2011, on form and improving
… The way high heels and walking boots can happily share the varied spaces in and around the inn
… Art and the way the whole place has been sensitively, intelligently accented with worthy details
