Eilean Iarmain in Sleat is as quaint a huddle of interesting places on a scenic spit of land as ever one might find. At the hub, a fine inn with Gaelic in its soul – Sabhal Mòr Ostaig college was pioneered by inn owner the late Sir Iain Noble. Stay in the Stables suites, Garden House or old taigh-osda itself: from family suites to romantic doubles. You'll always know in which country you are: this is a tranquil pulse-point of Alba. There’s hunting tartan and modern island art; an exciting wine list in an elegant dining room; and venison burgers in Bar am Praban. Open fires all round.
