Judges' notes

This is a unique place. Certainly it confounds traditional star grading - which is why it's not got one from the AA or VisitScotland. We've given it 3 Red Stars but that's not the whole story. It's popular, winning distinctions including the Good For the Soul Award 2011 and a chef gold medal which perhaps says more than stars ever might. Some parts might be 2 or 3 star while others 4 but the atmosphere gets a high-five from many who just love it. Bedrooms typify this variation, ranging from simple twin, double or family to four-posters and romantic Jacobite suite.

It's not posh but the historic house is quite grand; its setting on Loch Shiel is beautiful, the scenery of the whole area a majestic backdrop. Step inside the mansion and you couldn't be anywhere but Scotland: antlers, log fires, old pine panelling; big gilt framed pictures of Bonnie Prince Charlie, creaky wooden floors, Persian rugs; and a fine bar where live music is planned... but sometimes just happens. It's just an almightily relaxing big Highland house reeking with a sense of place.

Your engaging hosts are Duncan and Manja Gibson; assistant Fiona Shedden won a Hospitality Gold Medal 2011. Duncan was head chef at a 3 AA-rosetted hotel so it's no wonder the dining is very good indeed... be it in the bar (try the criomagan blasda - delicious Scottish nibbles / tapas) or from the menu in the dark red, grandly-ceilinged dining room. The food (including kids' dishes) has integrity and sound provenance.

Nearby are iconic sights of Scotland: the Glenfinnan Monument and the famous viaduct over which steam trains do still chuff. And here - or immediately hereabouts - is the site of the magical, terrifying, wondrous Hogwarts School. It's there - out in the mists there - somewhere.

Closed in winter.
