Judges' notes

In many ways this is one of the last of a breed of classic country house hotel; so many others have gone boldly upmarket (and into a different price bracket) or have fallen away. Glengarry, however, has sailed on, magnificently untroubled by much change, and continues to do what it does very, very well: traditional Scots hospitality, warmly personal service, all in an atmosphere as Highland as Balmoral itself.

As Invergarry House it was built near the old castle in 1866 for a director of the Hudson Bay Company and MP by that defining architect of his day, David Bryce. It's a big-windowed, solid, lovely lump of a place with many a sweet detail to discover. The 60 acres of lochside grounds [map] feature spreading trees, rhododendrons, hidden paths, tennis court, boats for hire on Loch Oich. Children adore it all.

The MacCallum family oversees with care. Guests from all over the world come, and come back. This is a kind of Scottish hotel that meets a demand - indeed, a need in some to find the 'real' Scotland. A long drive through woods past an old castle; the tartan carpet and pine panelling; log fires and big lounges; wall stones inscribed in Gaelic: the picture is complete. Dinner is served in a bustling, traditional dining room where a wonderfully eclectic mix of guests gather happily. At breakfast, fresh-baked scones are a hit.

And guest votes helped them win Country House Hotel of the Year 2010; sunny Heather Boyd is Receptionist of the Year 2011. Each bedroom is unique; chat about your wishes. Room 5 has a four-poster and big bay window; 23 is another lovely deluxe with huge four poster; room 30 is our favourite standard double, recently done-up (tactfully). Free, good wi-fi. Oh, and a Roberts radio in all. Naturally.

Closed in winter.
