Judges' notes

Facing out to Holy Isle from Lamlash village in south-east Arran the gaze scans pretty Lamlash Bay. One night in 1263 as the struggles between Vikings and Scots for control of the western and northern islands reached its denouement the huge fleet of the Norwegian king anchored in this bay. Can you imagine? Today, with the isle a spiritual sanctuary and a No Take Zone (NTZ) saving even the sole, peace has broken out.

Glenisle is a fresh, colourful and perfectly-formed small boutique hotel with a seaside twist. Skilfully run - apparent to any seasoned traveller - the Rising Star Small Hotel of the Year 2011 is full of informal good taste. Sussed owners Geoff and Tim undertook an entirely successful refurb which saw stone walls and wooden floors revealed, smart contemporary lighting and spot-on colours complementing bright, often witty local works of art (many for sale). Good free wi-fi throughout, happily.

Bedrooms: from sweet singles and 'cosy doubles' to superiors and a wow Premier Suite with lavish double shower and slipper bath in the bay window. All rooms are good; many extremely so - way ahead of the VisitScotland star rating; a very high mark from us for design, mood and detail. Tips include premier rooms 1 and 2 (windows two sides); standards 4 and 5; 6 and 7 have super bathrooms. Downstairs: bar and well-furnished snug; guest library lounge with books and games; and a (mainly) conservatory-style restaurant. Cool music plays softly. Outdoors, a terrace with good seating, and walled garden.

Good food is from an interesting and clear modern menu, presented unfussily, much founded on local ingredients. There's a freshness to the whole dining experience; it's not stuffy / fine dining but it is a quality affair. And should you be here on an affari di cuori, get your hands on the keys to that big suite
