Judges' notes

Scotland's many islands are rightly described as jewels in the nation's crown and Harris, or na Hearadh in Gaelic, has worldwide renown and brand-recognition thanks to the fashionable tweed that carries the unique orb logo. Economies on the fringe of Europe - and this certainly is the north-west edge of the EU - can be fragile. In hotel terms this can mean, frankly, a bit disappointing at times; investment is tough.

But here, through endeavour, drive and local enthusiasm the Macleod family have created a new, and new type, of island hotel. It's boutique in style and has an array of rather sleek bedrooms with good bathrooms with Highland toiletries. Free wi-fi and iPod stations in deluxe rooms. Family rooms and snazzy singles available. It could be in town. Except that it is at the very pier of Tarbert, the island capital. It's at the hub of things and simply couldn't be easier to get to if you come across by CalMac ferry.

Owners Chirsty and Angus were determined to make good food a part of the enterprise and thus it is so. From bar meals in the village hub bar, Mote, to the open-seasonally Pierhouse restaurant, you can expect fresh and delicious modern classics - sort of top-end bistro fare - with a Scottish or island flavour. The bar is a great success and is a truly vibrant yet stylish pub where locals chat and have a night out and guests enjoy the atmosphere.

The team will be happy to help you with information on the island and there is indeed plenty to see and do. Wild white beaches with nobody there except yourselves, moonscape hills and lochans, wide skies and the blooming heather. It's an escape to treasure, and Hotel Hebrides is a lively, happy base.

Self-catering cottages also available: Kirklee Cottages.

Highly Recommended by us as an Island Hotel.
