Judges' notes

We think this one of the most - and the word is chosen carefully - delightful small country hotels in Scotland. Everything about it pleases the eye. The setting for the Isle of Arran's oldest house is sheltered and pretty, a couple of miles from Brodick and well up Glen Cloy. Genuine historic resonance  and theatrical gardens set the stage for a stay. At once the house appears immaculate and these first impressions do not deceive. This is, all-in-all, a rather magical spot.

The peacocks may greet you before one of the convivial main team of Geoffrey, Antony or Helen do. Step indoors and the inherent gracefulness of the architecture - recovered and restored by the current owners - is set off with good taste and wit. Bedrooms are on both floors and around the sweet courtyard stables to the rear; additionally there are Design Gold Medal 2011-winning deluxe cottages. From classic four poster romance to a gorgeous single or the airy modern elegance of the cottages, choice is impressive.

The blue drawing room is Queen Mum blue and gold; all coffee table books, games and Persian rugs. The yellow room has a big open fire, grand piano and sofas plump as Jennifer Lopez's upholstery. Both these upstairs rooms are full of
objet d'art and loving touches. It's friendly, it's intimate... and it is quality.

The dining room is dusky red and has a hint of the Mediterranean about it. Stripped wood floors, linen napery and finely laid tables - and yet not overly posh; big windows look to the woods and gardens. Antony Butterworth cooks natural things in a naturally imaginative and sophisticated style. Menus are elaborated with aphorisms and at breakfast we loved the option of duck eggs - "should the ladies oblige".

*Open seasonally. Ferry-inclusive packages available.

Highest Recommendation as a Small Country House Hotel.
*We also give our Highest Recommendation to the Deluxe Cottages.
