Judges' notes

A touch of genius it was to give a New England feel to the only hotel on the banks of the only body of water in Scotland called a 'lake'. And it has worked out beautifully. (That the hotel is partner of America's oldest inn merely adds to the story.) Placid Lake of Menteith in The Trossachs is normally only disturbed by the creak of trout anglers' rowlocks and paddles; in winter, though, as in recent years, the great 'roaring game' of curling has introduced this country hotel gem to many.

The pristine building - itself most Scottish in style, all white and robust - is next to Nick Nairn Cook School and photogenic Port of Menteith church; its lawn leads down to the water. On bright days the terrace can be full: the charm of the place has a pull. At certain times the location alone would make it busy, thus it's doubly good to say it's far better than it might need be. Glasgow is under an hour away; Stirling 20 minutes.

The Port bar serving that terrace is all rustic chic: big log fire, timber floors, stone, old photos and vibrant bar menu make for a hit atmosphere. Adjoining is the stylish, open-plan lounge with funky 'malt vault' and the impressive, contemporary Waterfront conservatory restaurant. Chef Graham Campbell is very good, winning
Médaille d’Or 2011. [Dinner menu.] Free wi-fi. Meeting facilities are good.

All bedrooms have had a loving makeover and range from fresh, simple elegance in standard and intermediate rooms (specify lake view if desired) to the extra comforts of superiors. Lake view superiors are truly gorgeous rooms with uplifting, bold, original designs. A couple of spacious rooms have French doors onto their lochside patio. Look over to misty Inchmahome island and its enchanting priory ruins... and if you don't find all of this perfectly romantic, then your own soul might just need a wee check-up.
