Since 2008 this highly popular hotel with famed location has been enhanced by newer owners Calum and Rachel Ross. They have invested considerably, imparting both style and passion. It's a Victorian lodge plus the modern Cedar Wing which has ground floor rooms with French doors and terraces (doggie-friendly and a sense of freedom we love) and upper level ones with balconies. Top rooms are in the main house, though some newly-refurbished Cedar ones are just lovely. Arduaine Restaurant has a panoramic vista of Asknish Bay; chef Colin MacDonald and crew serve very good, superbly fresh modern Scottish food. For casual dining, real beers new Chartroom II Bistro is ideal; enjoy a drink or meal al fresco on warm days. A most worthy Small Country Hotel of the Year 2010.

Need to know

> Best room is glam first-floor Master Bedroom; has own balcony, is contemporary, chic
> The similarly-priced Junior Suite is spacious and more traditional in decor and feel
> Refurbished upper-level
Cedar Wing rooms have balconies and are best Cedar options
> If you don't mind a smaller room then ask for the delightful blue Compact Double
>
Arduaine Gardens are adjacent; gorgeous, especially in spring, early summer; bring boots
> A charming private dining / meeting room, The Library, with open fire, is available
> Two sitting rooms with big windows, big views offer ample sofas and space to relax
> Plenty of books, games, CDs and DVDs available to borrow and enjoy
> There's a
Therapy Room and guests can enjoy a range of holistic treatments
> Hotel is just 18 miles south of
Oban with all its island-hopping ferry possibilities
