Judges' notes

Hardly more than a self-respecting monster's roar from a certain loch you'll find this rather cool little modern-traditional inn tucked away in a village, by a river. It came to our attention thanks to enthusiastic feedback via the awards' website and forms such as on this page. It went on to win Rising Star Inn of the Year 2011. Good inns are too few and too far between, sadly, but here we have a great wee character.

Much thought went into the design - clearly. Stone floors and heritage details meet with modern lighting, colourful paintings and touches of tartan in a flexible building with a courtyard / beer garden to the rear. Climbers, families, romantic weekenders - all can fit in. It isn't posh but is well done and much better so than it needed to be: always the hallmark of something with good people behind it. Manager Rory Smith has a rakish twinkle in his eye; co-owner Judith Fish is an acclaimed innkeeper who runs the wonderful, remote Applecross Inn.

Food is tasty and fresh real stuff. A blackboard highlights some of the day's dishes and you can dine inexpensively or quite finely. Prawns come from Applecross Bay when possible; fish is a highlight, as is Loch Laggan venison. The Brewery bar is casual with good Scottish ales on the go.

Upstairs are the bedrooms. While done up in a simple, fresh style they have ample nice little touches and decent bathrooms. There is free wi-fi. Breakfast is notably flexible time-wise and it's a cheery place in which to start the day. And since the location is handy for Loch Ness, Inverness or the road to Skye you'll have plenty options when you're out from this natty inn.
