Judges' notes

A pleasant half-hour or so by car from Edinburgh's city bypass, with easy links to the airport, will have you rolling in the deep hills near Peebles in the Borders. This is Tweed - the river, that is - and cashmere country, now famous as a mountain biking mecca. In fact it would be quite sussed to stay in this area while having a best-of-both-worlds break in the capital and its green fringe. For a start, the parking's a cinch and in this tranquil spot your sleep may be deeper.

Macdonald Hotels opened the Cardrona Hotel, Golf and Spa resort a few years ago now. It arrived with a hurrah... and then drifted a bit. But these days, under the warm personality of local-born manager Morag Stark, the hotel is looking good and reports are positive. The Turnaround Award 2011 - for the most improved Scottish hotel - was won; management and staff (including restaurant manager Helen) were recognised for their work. Their hotel has now become somewhere we can happily recommend.

The golf course is maturing well. Designed by an ex-Ryder Cup player the par 72 course takes you through woodland and along the riverside. Other leisure facilities are a Vital spa, Technogym and 18-metre pool with restful views. Hungry? Renwicks restaurant is worthy of its AA rosette; chef Ivor Clark maintains high standards and it's a very pleasant place to dine. Spikes bar is ideal for casual drinks or snacks, best in summer when the terrace is alive. Breakfast, while busy at weekends, has variety and quality.

Bedrooms are of a comfortable, classic design; the best are on the ground floor facing the river and have French doors. We've found check-in and reception to be especially pleasant. Weddings and business meetings benefit from the setting and nice team: breathing space for creative thinking, for sure.

Recommended by us as a Country Leisure Hotel.
