Judges' notes

This part of Scotland is something of a crossroads: industry and tourism, new bridges and key motorways. Stirling, Edinburgh and Glasgow are easy to get to. There are several well-known bigger hotels in the Falkirk area and this is one. And happily it's been the beneficiary of investment to rooms, restaurant, bar and - notably - the all-new spa. So there's more to the area than the Wheel, however revolutionary that is.

Manager Gold Medal-winner Paul Bray leads a friendly crew. The reception foyer is now sleek with grey plaid carpet and modern furnishings; beyond that the smart Priory bar and a vibrant new restaurant, the Scottish Steak Club, are done with witty design, atmosphere and comfort. A Josper grill and prime Aberdeenshire beef ensure taste and quality. As you can see from the pics above, it looks great too. [Menu.]

The Vital spa is all-new: Macdonald do mid-range spas well and this, the Rising Star Spa 2011-winner, will thrive. You'll find a good treatments menu, attractive therapy rooms (and that all-important thing, a relaxation room) plus a Technogym-equipped gym and brand- new swimming pool with sauna and steam rooms. The spa area has its own 'tea house' area for (mostly!) healthy snacks.

Bedrooms offer a good range of choice; all 98 have been refurbished in one way or another. We like the executive rooms but all have a business-class feel. Suites are spacious, handsome. Events-wise the function suites and meetings spaces have had a makeover, too; the Inchyra suite can take 300+ for dinner while the Menteith suite is elegant for wedding breakfasts of up to 150 or so. In the centre of Scotland, this helpful location - with easy, free parking - might just be a bonus. This restyled hotel decidedly is.

Recommended by us as a Business & Leisure Hotel.
