Judges' notes

Just half a dozen miles west of Aberdeen (easy access to the city or airport) this riverside country hotel is an atmospheric development huddled around a rugged whitewashed original 'ha hoose' dating back to 1225. There's a renowned Knights Templar connection; guests can wander across to a picturesque walled graveyard where ceremonies still occasionally take place. There's fishing available on the Dee for guests.

The hotel is multifaceted and can be seen as a good business choice (easy parking, internet access, space for meetings) or country escape as there's much to do and see in this lovely area. Many choose to have their wedding here: good event facilities and the setting, backdrop and charm all make for a delightful occasion. And now, under a new manager, changes are afoot to enhance the hotel.

We'll let you know as soon as the first of the bold new 'rooms for romance' designer bedrooms opens this year. Currently the hotel offers comfortable bedrooms with Scottish touches in the older part, while the best, perhaps, are the airy modern riverside rooms and terrace rooms. The latter have had subtle design upgrades and offer excellent facilities including  modern bathrooms and inviting walk-in showers.

Dinner is served in the attractive, old stone-walled Priory restaurant; bar meals and drinks can be enjoyed in the traditional-style Poacher's Pocket. Strikingly memorable and unique is the ha hoose, now residents' lounge, with its big granite fireplace and full-height open beamed ceiling with flags.

*We'll update this entry regularly for 2012 as Manager Gold Medal -winning Peter Sim's enhancements take shape.
