A pleasant country drive west of Aberdeen you'll find the new-look, re-launched Meldrum House hotel and (18 hole) golf estate. It’s quite a place: pass imposing gates and come up the drive, fountains playing in small lochs; it feels upscale, classy. There’s a sense of occasion. It is undoubtedly now the top hotel in the area and a real asset to Aberdeenshire. To one side of a central 'square' is the turreted old house, dating back in parts to the 13th century; facing this is The Stables development where sassy, exciting new bedrooms await. Rooms in the main house have also been fully re-designed to dramatic contemporary effect. The foyer and plush drawing room have crackling open fires. A lovely barrel-vaulted bar showcases the superb local malt, Glen Garioch. A quality experience. More photos.
Need to know
> Bedrooms are available in the old house or in the superb, newly-restored Stables block
> All rooms are good and many are both indulgent and beautifully designed, down to small details
> Stables room 411 is a spacious, striking super king with open rafters ceiling, superb bathroom
> The Stables offers 13 rooms but a gorgeous smaller one (404) has a low, old open-beamed ceiling
> Main house, room 1: dramatic black / gold four poster; big windows; turret space with telescope
> Room 6 has fine architectural plasterwork incl. cherubs; luxury feel and a well-lit, good bathroom
> Room 8 is a striking one: huge carved doors, bay window, quilted leather headboard; though loo plain
> The restaurant is extremely comfortable, spacious; won Taste of Grampian restaurant award 2010
> Ideal for seminars, other corporate events; and glamorous weddings in the permanent marquee
> The golf course – which is indisputably beautiful – is private but as a guest you arrange to play
We love…
… Bold, luxurious bedrooms which make the very most out of rich historical features
… The Stables development’s quality finish: it feels like an expensive project (and we know it was)
… The sense of being set apart in a club-like green country oasis; it feels privileged; yet much to do
… The way the old house and The Stables have been linked by a courtyard with imposing fountain
… Crackling real fires to welcome you in the foyer, and comfort you in the stylish sitting room
