Judges' notes

Opus One is the restaurant within this hotel and it offers some of the best dining in Perth. We don't normally open our notes with a restaurant summary... but it's most unusual to come across a modern fine dining experience of such quality within what is a standard 3 star traditional hotel. And the fresh, tasty fare is also available in Gavin's bar & bistro which was refurbished a bit in 2011.

Accommodation at the hotel is contemporary in style: pale colours with modern furnishings. Choose from single, double or triple rooms. Desks are provided in most rooms. We understand that plusher Opus bedrooms may follow soon and will keep you posted. Owners Sarah and Owen Boyle are a lovely couple and the hotel is generally a friendly choice. Manager Alan Berwick won a Manager Gold Medal 2011. Parking is relatively easy; reception is modern and sleek if compact while the adjacent open-plan Café 22 offers coffee, scones, snacks, deep sofas and wifi.

But back to the food. French head chef Romi Denesle, son of a chef from Normandy, won a Médaille d'Or 2011 and offers a strongly Perthshire-focussed menu; his style is contemporary and yet quite robust. The décor in Opus One is city smart and comfortable; it's not posh in the traditional sense but is a very successful design for the space. The quality of the food is the especial strength and this has been recognised with several awards including Rising Star restaurant of the Year 2009. Here's a very useful menu and wine list page from the dedicated restaurant site.

The hotel has a function suite and offers a range of events and conference facilities.
