Judges' notes

Location, location, location... the Old Waverley Hotel is a good pick if you want to be in the middle of things in Edinburgh. It not only faces the impressive Scott Monument and east end of Princes Street Gardens but is on a corner so more rooms can share the view of the historic city skyline and castle

This is a well-managed 3 star hotel, one which has improved over the past year. The entrance is a canopied doorway only as shops occupy the street level of the handsome block; the reception area on the first level was refurbished in 2011 with a more modern look. Beyond that is the inviting, big-windowed Abbotsford lounge bar where comfy seating and vistas make for a popular coffee-stop. Snacks, afternoon tea and drinks are all available here most of the day; it's a nice, bright setting, recently refreshed. Although the hotel is very busy, often full, staff are friendly and willing.

Bedrooms vary. A surprising number are good rooms with excellent - and in some cases magnificent - views. Décor is traditional; this is not a boutique hotel. We found housekeeping to be good and most of the accommodation met a decent 3 star rating. Upper-level front and side-facing rooms are best; a couple are on the corner and have rather cute turret seating areas. A new wi-fi system in autumn 2011 has seen a much enhanced service. Bathrooms are finished with granite. As with most older city hotels some rooms have no view so if that is a concern do ask - as ever, it's down to the rate you pay... and a nice request!

Cranston's restaurant is informally elegant with high ceiling, pale tones, that grand outlook. The menu features Scottish produce and a traditional feel. It's a pleasing place for lunch (good value) or dinner. Breakfast is served here: then just step out the door and start your day - Princes Street and beyond await.

3 Blue Stars - City Hotel
