Rooms 12

A lively, friendly crew man this easy-going hotel right on the waterfront, looking out to the shapely hills of Morvern and isle of Lismore. It’s a simple proposition: fresh, light rooms with a natural quiet tone; many activities and to-do ideas; cheery bar and lounge; and a real seafood restaurant – now markedly better. Food is mouth-wateringly good, apt; the fish and shellfish just-out-the-sea. Derek McLean, chef. Moorings and facilities mean food and drink are lapped up by choosy west coast yachters. The old building was once the piermaster’s house; its unusual shape gives the restaurant a round bay of windows with big views. Owner Nick had a previous life as an expedition arranger; his sense of adventure remains after 5 years here. A relaxed, comfy escape with a holiday feel. Facilities summary.

Need to know

> 12 Bedrooms are in a solidly-built block next to old part; excellent soundproofing; free wi-fi
> Sea loch view rooms we like; snazzy modern bathrooms a hit; rear view rooms are nice, too
> One room has its own external door for freedom (smokers?); it's one of the two superior rooms
> All rooms have nice touches; most have shams and throws in a lovely soft Arran type wool knit
> Real, glowing stoves warm the bar; a spiffing double-sided one heats the guest lounge and restaurant
> Hidden away, almost, is a cosy little residents lounge; leather sofas, tartan, books, maps, games
> Moorings and facilities are available to yachters – moorings are free as long as you drink / dine!
> If you have been in the past then both rooms and restaurant have got better this year
> Treatments are available from quite an extensive list; traditional Finnish sauna free to guests
> Check hotel's activities page and summer / winter sections; they'll happily help you plan your visit

We love…

... The kick-off-your-shoes relaxed mood; it isn’t posh but there are valued sophisticated enlightenments
… Big, colourful paintings in the dining areas and other witty, pleasing objects and whimsies
… Flappingly fresh seafood and fine local game served in the big-windowed restaurant; nice staff
… Quiet bedrooms are finished in natural tones – hints of a restaurant with rooms
… The whole area offers endless things to visit, view, experience, photograph and absorb
