Judges' notes

In south-west Scotland the pretty harbour village of Portpatrick is popular for a break or day out. Galloway is a wonderful area full of places to go, things to do, great stuff to eat. Rickwood is a small hotel, rated a 3 gold star guest house by VisitScotland; it's high on the hill, in a lovely garden, looking out to Ireland.

Bedrooms are spotless, attractive and comfortable: contemporary twins and doubles, a family room and the top accommodation, on the first floor with superb views, the Factor's suite. This room has a leather suite, furnishings made from reclaimed timber and a larger, airy bathroom. Two spacious ground floor bedrooms: one with seating area by a big window, and large corner shower unit. Nice hospitality trays in all; many bright pictures with a local theme. Free wi-fi. Fresh flowers, bathrobes.

Fred and Maggie Findlay are kind hosts and in 2011 they won the Guest House Customer Care Award. Both have a keen eye for detail and run their hospitality business with enthusiasm. As you sit and relax in the conservatory lounge, nibbling perhaps on some of Maggie's delectable shortbread, which helps raise funds for
Save the Children, catching a glimpse of the new solar panels, you might reflect on how larger establishments might learn from this positive approach.

Breakfast was much acclaimed by our judge; the morning menu features specials plus the highly popular Kiwi Special - bacon with banana and maple syrup on a toasted muffin garnished with kiwi fruit. Mmm! Dinner is also available; a set menu based on local ingredients such as Wigtownshire lamb: do book this ahead. So, from rising to sleeping, if you're looking for a friendly, good value, personally-run place with high standards, a holiday feel, with location and setting, then Rickwood is decidedly a good option.

3 Gold Stars - Guest House
