Judges' notes

Pop EH22 4TR into the satnav or Google [map]. See how handy this remarkably successful gastropub is for Edinburgh and its city ring road. Nestling by an impressive Victorian viaduct, not too far from Rosslyn Chapel, the Sun Inn's a family affair run by the Minto team - and a skilled, multi-talented lot they are, too. It won Gastropub of the Year 2010 and 2011 plus AA Pub of the Year Scotland 2010. Why?

Well, it's not hard to see, really; but the good thing is that positive first impressions are not skin deep. This show runs week-in, week-out at high levels of business and constancy of service. Food is, of course, at the core. Head chef Ian Minto has forged a much-loved style and quality here: it's the kind of food people want. Freshness, interesting twists on old favourites, sound provenance and a focus on flavour make dishes delicious and
target-hitting. Pastry chef Maxine Cramb won the Pâtissière Award 2011. Enjoy dining by the fire when chilly or al fresco on the attractive terrace when fine.

The inn's bedrooms are a hit too, dontcha know. The same flair for rural pzazz that marks out dining areas with smart and apt design detail has made it upstairs to where a handful of sassy boutique rooms await. The best room has a huge, freestanding copper bath in the middle of the bedroom while attractive toiletries and candles are provided to help further the mood. You can see images above in the gallery. The standard rooms are all fresh and modern. Outside, parking is free and safe.

The Sun Inn's manager / chef Craig Minto knows how to use social media well so like them on Facebook as he often posts quickly snapped-up last-minute offers. This year his father Ian won a Chef
Médaille d’Or 2011 and along with the rest of the family he can be proud of their winning establishment.
