Judges' notes

'Worth the journey' is this braw wee hotel's own motto. And we agree. Winner of the Small Country Hotel of the Year 2011 title it's the kind of Highland hospitality outpost so often sought: neither too expensive nor too grand yet nonetheless offering quality and high standards with charm and warmth. Investment has seen it get better - while happily not losing touch with reality. Hotel factsheet.

Sutherland's coast has a wild, raw beauty. It's incredibly photogenic thanks to wide skies, cliffs and beaches, green hills and sudden vistas. Tongue - better rendered as Tunga in Gaelic - sits by a sweeping bay over which Ben Loyal dominates. The hotel, distinctive in maroon pine panelling with cream paintwork, is on the right as you drive downhill into the village. It's been a welcome sight for travellers since the 1800s. Today, Lorraine and David Hook are popular hosts, keeping up the best of traditions.

Food and drink? A cosily elegant dining room with open fire and lovely old furniture serves many generous, fresh choices. Eat casually in the stove-warmed Falcon lounge bar. Local produce, including from Castle of Mey, features at delicious breakfasts. Year-round the Brass Tap is a vital hub of this remote community. Other plusses: a therapy room; free wi-fi; good whisky list; local gifts; heaps of visitor info.

The 19 fine bedrooms range from single or smaller top-floor ones with sloping eaves to thoughtfully-decorated rooms with Anta fabrics and a suite with real fire and big windows on three sides. The range and flexibility of accommodation is excellent. And it's all decidedly romantic - not in an ersatz fashion, either. If you don't feel the love here then it's time to move on. To someone else, we mean.
