Judges' notes

The mark of a really good hotel is when it plays fully to its strengths. Trigony does just that: it's a genuinely delightful, historic country house and has not gone down any themed route... it has a timeless and winsome air untrammelled by passing fads or artifice. The creeper-clad Dumfriesshire building is surrounded by gardens fresh and pretty; views to the hills through mature trees and seasonal flowers create a sense of wellbeing. The owning family, here for many years, have an equally hospitable and unaffected way and we praise highly Jan and Adam's successful approach.

The hotel, rich with architectural detail and highly photogenic, is a house of fresh flowers and interesting, delicious natural food all lifted by an artful style and easy atmosphere. In fact the fare won a Real & Local Food Gold Medal 2012; organic is a strong theme and, indeed, an organic farm is the hotel's neighbour. Recently we stayed and had a venison dish of such quality we could only class as 'best possible'. Dine in the restaurant or charming bar; real fires in each. [Sample menu.] Review in the
Sunday Herald. Breakfast is a joy and won an award from us several years ago; it's still as good.

Rooms are each unique and it's a good idea to explore the hotel's website. The garden suite is the most spacious and even has its own private heated conservatory with terrace. Superior rooms have extra space and we much liked room 3 with its big garden view - look out on the pond and, if lucky like us, a falconry display. Classic rooms cost a little less. We loved the handmade Scottish toiletries and
Roberts radios. The hotel is notably dog-friendly and has all the facilities to make pooch and its people most welcome - and not an afterthought. Equally welcome are lovers: romantic breaks await. As do activities galore.
